As 2024 quickly approaches, your nonprofit is most likely immersed in last-minute fundraising. After all, studies have shown approximately 25 % of all giving occurs in December and taxpayers who itemize on their tax returns in 2023 will be allowed to deduct qualifying charitable contributions.
Don’t forget to incorporate a personal touch while making last-minute pitches. Many studies have shown that when a friend, family member, or coworker asks, people are more likely to donate. Ask board members to reach out to their networks now and into the new year.
Ardent Supporters
All stakeholders in your organization can promote your nonprofit and solicit support from their contacts. Aside from development professionals, board members are the most effective fundraisers because they know your organization, are passionate about your purpose, and typically have a vast network of contacts in corporate and philanthropic circles.
Support their efforts by ensuring they have the necessary knowledge and training. Give them a wish list of specific services or goods that your nonprofit requires. Keep in mind that not all of their contacts may be able to contribute financially. Some people, however, may be able to offer in-kind goods or services.
Fundraising In Person
When making a personal plea to prospective donors, your board members should meet in person whenever possible. While email can save time, in-person appeals are more effective. Personal appeals can also be beneficial if your nonprofit provides donors with something in exchange for their time, such as coffee or lunch.
Board members must humanize your cause while meeting with prospective donors. For example, if your organization raises funds for cancer therapy, board members have been touched by the disease, and they may share their personal stories to demonstrate why they support your nonprofit’s work. Even if you’re appealing to potential donors’ philanthropic instincts, it’s important to emphasize other potential benefits. For example, if your nonprofit is attempting to persuade business owners to purchase ad space in your newsletter, board members could emphasize that your supporters are a desired demographic in terms of purchasing power, as well as a wish to “buy local.”
Welcome to the New Year!
2023 is coming to an end, but you can use these fundraising methods in the new year, as well. Plan more small gatherings for board members to interact with significant donors. Meanwhile, contact us to discuss your nonprofit’s financial health and strategies to improve it.
