GuideStar recently released “Nine Things You Might Not Know about U.S. Nonprofits”. They include:

• As of July 2015, more than 1.5 million nonprofits were registered with the IRS as tax exempt
• In 2014, charitable giving in the U.S. totaled $358 billion
• Public charities make up more than two-thirds of exempt organizations
• Only 10% of organizations registered with the IRS as of July 2015 have revenues of $500,000 or more
• Public charities hold approximately 62% of the assets
• Private foundations make up 7% of exempt organizations but hold 16% of the assets
