In March and April of this year, a restaurant chain announced their systems had been hacked causing customer data to be compromised. In mid-May, a ransomware attack affected hundreds of thousands of computers throughout Europe and Asia leaving many companies without access to the necessary data on their networks.

When these events occur, it is critical that you are able to say with certainty to your board, customers or donors, that you are doing the utmost to protect the information that your organization and company uses and stores. Taking the necessary precautions to minimize interruptions to business and to protect customer and/or donor information is critical to your integrity. Here are some questions to keep in mind when thinking about your company’s or organization’s cyber security:

• Is your network regularly backed up?
• Is the data on your network and individual computers encrypted?
• Do you have complex passwords?
• Do you have a network firewall in place, and is it up-to-date?
• Are your mobile devices (phones & tablets) secure?

If you don’t know the answers to the above questions, let’s discuss how you could benefit from an evaluation of your information systems by Michael Shoffner, HW&Co.’s cyber security expert:
